The Hopi silversmiths typically use their traditional overlay technique with their earrings as well. Hopi jewelers are known to use a variety of techniques when crafting earrings. Each pair shows skill and creativity especially in choosing and cutting the design. As generations have passed each has developed their own style, skills and talents. Yet, the Hopi jewelers still seem to keep the unique style of their heritage.
Hopi women have not been wearing silver earrings for long. The specific time the Hopi started silversmith is unknown but, researchers say it was likely to have started in the early 1900's. So, it's very unlikely Hopi women were wearing silver earrings before this time.
